BATTLE CREEK, MI (WTVB) – Harper Creek wrapped up the Interstate 8 baseball championship with a doubleheader sweep against visiting Coldwater, 3-0 and 3-2.
The Cardinals were held to four hits in the opener: singles from Dayton Ennis and Logan Turner and two singles from Owen Tappenden. The Beavers were also held to four hits, but were able score one run in the fourth off starter Landon Auble and two runs in the sixth off Ennis in relief.
In the nightcap, an RBI double from Royale Fleming and an RBI single from Tappenden brought home two runs in the third inning for Coldwater. After trailing 2-1 through five, Harper Creek responded with two runs in the sixth and got the Cards to go in order in the seventh to preserve the victory. Ennis went 2-for-4 at the plate, while Luke Stout was 2-for-3.
Coldwater fell to 8-18 overall and 5-7 in the Interstate 8. They will host Paw Paw on Tuesday and visit Union City on Wednesday prior to the start of Districts. Harper Creek, meanwhile, wrapped up league play at 10-2, two games ahead of Parma Western.
UNION CITY, MI – At Union City, the Chargers jumped out to a 6-0 lead and had to hang on for dear life for a 6-4 win over visiting Colon as the Magi scored four runs in the seventh. With two outs and a runner on third, Eli Payne came in to pitch and struck out the final batter to get the save.
Alex Boyer hit a two-run single and added another RBI on a groundout. Aidan Decker doubled, and Zac Covey went 2-for-3. Starting pitcher Simon Swartzle earned the victory, allowing one hit in two innings of work.
With the win, Union City improved to 13-13. They will host Stockbridge Friday for a makeup doubleheader.
