COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – In hopes the Coldwater Board of Public Utilities does not go through another lengthy internet outage like it did over two weeks ago, the CBPU Board of Directors approved a three-year contract on Wednesday night with Aspen Smart Networks to provide 20 gigabytes of Dedicated Internet Access.
Director Paul Jakubczak said the feed will utilize Everstream fiber which is a different path than their current supplier from MetroNet. The total cost would be $3,980 per month.
The internet issues took place after severe weather hit the area on May 15. The CBPU primary feed was taken out when a tornado knocked down six Consumer Energy poles in Battle Creek which had fiber attached.
Complicating matters, the fiber repairs could not take place until power lines were removed and poles replaced. The secondary feed was also affected by storms that rolled through the next evening which left CBPU without any internet service until May 19.
Jakubczak said they used an emergency provision to authorize this transaction knowing that it would need to come before the CBPU Board for final approval.
Jakubczak said the CBPU will continue to use MetroNet as their redundant feed as they look for additional options.
