COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Branch County Board of Commissioners brought forward a request from Administrator Frank Walsh during their work session Thursday to form a committee to find the county’s next Chief Public Defender.
The vacancy was created by the sudden resignation of Matthew Glaser May 22 after almost six years on the job. No reason has been given for his departure.
The Commissioners formally appointed Chris Vreeland May 27 as the Interim Chief Public Defender. He had been serving as Glaser’s assistant.
According to information provided to Walsh, the process to appoint a Public Defender is directed by the Board of Commissioners.
The search committee would consist of Circuit Court Judge Bill O’Grady, District Court Judge Brent Weigle, Probate Court Judge Kirk Kashian, County Clerk Terry Kubasiak, a County Commissioner and Walsh.
Formal action is scheduled on committee is scheduled to be taken during the Commissioners meeting on Tuesday afternoon.
According to Walsh’s memo to Commissioners for Thursday’s work session, the goal is to have a newly appointed Chief Public Defender by July 31.
