COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater City Council formally adopted the city’s Fiscal Year 2026 general fund budget which totals nearly $13-and-a-half million on Monday night.
City Manager Keith Baker reported to the Council that with a surplus payment received from the State of Michigan after the last budget amendment, the City is expecting a surplus in the 2025 fiscal year while early budget projections show a small deficit for the 2026 fiscal year.
He added the City of Coldwater is in a financially strong position over the short term.
City Finance Director Tom Eldridge said there were no changes to the budget following a May 27 public hearing.
He once again mentioned the Headlee Rollback will have an affect on the city’s millage rate.
Even with the millage reduction, property taxes for the average City residential home owner will increase by 3-point-one percent.
The Council also passed resolutions covering the Special and Operating Funds Budget, the Unlimited Tax General Obligation Bond and the City Employee Retirement Fund.
Baker said 2026 fiscal year road projects will include significant work on North Clay Street and phase two of the Butters Avenue project. He added mill and fill work will also occur on portions of South Clay, Sauk River Drive and other streets.
