COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Branch County, is bracing for a significant heat wave as part of a broader swelter impacting the Midwest and Great Lakes region.
With temperatures expected to climb into the low to mid-90s and heat index values potentially exceeding 100 degrees, residents are urged to take precautions to stay safe during this prolonged period of extreme heat.
The National Weather Service has forecasted that the heat wave, driven by a high-pressure “heat dome,” will bring stifling temperatures and high humidity to Branch County and surrounding areas, starting this weekend and extending into early next week.
The heat is expected to peak on Sunday and Monday, with daytime highs in the mid-90s and nighttime lows only dropping to the mid-70s, offering little relief. This intense heat, combined with humidity, could pose serious health risks, particularly for vulnerable populations such as children, the elderly, and those without access to air conditioning.
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services are advising residents to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day, and seek out cooling centers if needed.
The National Weather has issued an Extreme Heat Watch from Saturday through Tuesday of next week.
