Marie Elizabeth VanAken, 71, of Coldwater passed away Friday, June 27, 2025 in Marshall, MI.
In accordance with her wishes, cremation has taken place with a celebration of life to be held at a later date.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Dutcher Funeral Home in Coldwater.
She was born November 30, 1953, to Delmer and Martha (Covey) Haynes in Coldwater, MI. On June 14, 1975, Marie married Charles VanAken and he preceded her in death October 9, 2004.
Marie graduated from Coldwater High School in 1971 and attended Wright Beauty Academy. She was a hairstylist for 19 years at Village Boutique before she purchased the business in 1991. She was the owner/operator and stylist at the salon for 20 years before retiring in 2011.
She was a faithful member of St. Charles Catholic Church in Coldwater, MI and held a sincere passion for the outdoors. Hunting, fishing, and mushrooming trips up North were some of the hobbies she enjoyed most and when she wasn’t doing those, she was always up for watching a ball game whether it was the Detroit Tigers or the Lions; but her favorite team to cheer for and watch was her grandchildren’s.
Marie will be dearly missed as a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend to many.
Marie leaves behind her son Ryan and Amy VanAken of Coldwater; her brother John and Julie Haynes of Coldwater; her grandchildren Rylie, Laynie, and Carly VanAken; her nieces and nephews Jada and Josh Carnell, Angela Huntley and many great nieces and nephews; her special cousin Dave Brown and her brother-in-law Larry Nutt.
In addition to her husband Charles VanAken, Marie was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Mardel Nutt.
