STEUBEN COUNTY, IN (WTVB) – Local farmers came to rescue cattle that were trapped in a trailer after a property damage crash on Monday afternoon.
According to the Indiana State Police (ISP), they responded to a property damage crash in the curves on US 20 near CR 900 West around 2 :40p.m.
The crash investigation shows a black 2015 Peterbilt tractor was westbound on 20 pulling a livestock trailer and was driving too fast going into the curves near Lane 102 West Otter Lake Rd. The tractor/trailer combination rolled onto its side as it attempted to make the curve. The driver was not injured, but the crash shut down US 20 in that area for several hours as local farmers arrived to help save the trapped cattle.
Unfortunately, some cattle did not make it through the crash. About 55 cattle did survive and were rescued by local farmers who had heard about the crash and began arriving on scene to assist. The farmers were able to work with Troopers to get the cattle out of the trailer. They loaded them up and took them to their farms where they will care for them until the transportation company can arrive and take them to the feeder lot where they were originally headed.
The Indiana State Police were assisted at the crash by local farmers, Steuben County Sheriff’s Department, Steuben County EMS, Steuben County EMA, Orland Fire Department and Bills Towing.
