MARSHALL, MI (WTVB) – In an effort to reduce construction work-zone fatalities and injuries, Michigan State Police’s (MSP) 5th District is launching a high-visibility traffic enforcement initiative in partnership with the Michigan Department of Transportation today.
The operation, “brake for the barrel,” aims to improve safety through education and increased police presence along I-69 from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Wednesday. With a focus on distracted driving, excessive speeding, and aggressive behaviors within work zones, officers stationed along the highway will serve as a reminder to drivers to reduce speed when workers are present.
Behaviors like following too closely or reduced reaction time due to distraction raise the risk of injuring or killing construction workers. According to MSP, Michigan sees an average of at least 20 work zone fatalities per year, and at least 1,000 vehicle related work-zone injuries.
Injuring or killing a construction worker carries a penalty of up to 15 years in prison and fines of up to $7,500.
