COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The man who evaded police multiple times by jumping into Matteson Lake back in May will spend a year in jail for violating his probation for a 5th time.
45-year-old Justin Malone evaded Branch County Sheriff’s Deputies for five days before being apprehended hiding in a garage in Bronson on May 18th. During his court appearance Malone told Judge Bill O’Grady none of the police report was true saying it was just a good story to keep telling. Malone also claimed he was ambushed by deputies.
Prosecutor Zack Stempien told Judge O’Grady Malone has shown a total disregard for the criminal justice system, for lawful authority, for any sort of order in this county or the state and that Malone poses a danger to the community.
Malone did receive 107 days credit for time served, but still has another open case for failure to appear in Circuit Court back in April on previous resisting arrest charges.
Malone did request a trial on all charges, but due to courthouse renovations any trial would be delayed.
As for his denial of the events that led to him jumping in the lake twice to evade deputies, the entire chain of events was caught on the recently purchased body cams now worn by deputies.
