COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The 100th edition of the Coldwater-Sturgis football rivalry belongs to the Coldwater Cardinals, as they defeated the visiting Trojans 44-6 Thursday night at Cardinal Field.
Coldwater scored the first 37 points of the contest. The first score came on a 10-yard pass from Dracyn Foster to Evan Lewis in the first quarter. The Cardinals put up 22 points in the second stanza, on a 5-yard Kayden Roby run, a 4-yard pass from Foster to Dayton Ennis, and a 8-yard quarterback keeper by Foster. Roby added another 5-yard TD run in the third before Sturgis finally got on the board, on a 27-yard pass from Beckett Lamb to Darren Speelman. Landon Dirschell wrapped up the scoring for the Cardinals in the fourth with an 8-yard TD run.
Foster finished the night 15/24 for 244 yards, 2 touchdowns, and no interceptions. Bennett McDonald had 4 receptions for 101 yards, Ennis finished with 6 catches for 97 yards and a score, and Lewis had 3 receptions for 43 yards and a TD. The Cardinals were also able to get the ground game going, outgaining the Trojans 169-53. Dirschell led the way with 12 carries for 58 yards and a touchdown, while Royale Flemming had 8 carries for 42 yards and Naseem Taha added 7 carries for 39 yards.
Sturgis quarterback Beckett Lamb was 8/22 for 74 yards and a touchdown; Speelman had 3 catches for 46 yards and a score. Leading rusher Melachi Warner had 10 carries for 26 yards.
Each team now has 49 victories in the series with two ties. Coldwater will take their 1-0 record to next Friday’s non-conference road game at Gull Lake. Sturgis fell to 0-1 and will play their home opener next Friday against Pennfield.
