QUINCY, MI (WTVB) – The Village of Quincy and Quincy Township have entered into a 30 day trial agreement for expanded police coverage following the approval of the township board.
The two entities began discussing resuming the expanded coverage earlier this summer and agreed on the 30 day trial period after village and township attorneys were able to come to an agreement on a contract. The Quincy Police Department has provided coverage to the township in the past, from 2014 through 2022 but the township canceled the contract, citing a budget deficit and claiming that the township did not receive sufficient service for its annual $24,000 contribution.
As part of the agreement the township, will enforce and prosecute violations and citations issued by Quincy police in the township. Those are offenses not charged criminally by the Branch County prosecutor, in addition the township has also agreed to pay half of the tuition, for recruit Travis Hurley in the amount of $5,250. Hurley who now in the police academy and expected to graduate in December would become the third full time officer on the department.
The village and township will negotiate a formal full-service contract if both are satisfied with the 30-day trial.
