PORTAGE, MI (WTVB) – In boys high school basketball, four Coldwater players finished in double figures as the Cardinals won their season-opener at Portage Central Tuesday night 78-54.
Aaron Bucklin won his debut as the Cardinals’ head coach. Coldwater led 27-22 at halftime and outscored the Mustangs in the second half 51-32. Coldwater hit 11 three-point buckets.
Gage McGuire led Coldwater with 18 points. McDonald’s Player of the Game Dylan Targgart had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Brandon Downs and Evan Sloan both had 10 points. Damon Beckhusen had 11 assists and four steals.

Battle Creek St. Phil’s 65, Bronson 53
Bronson fell behind in the first half and could not recover as they lost their season opener at home to Battle Creek Saint Phillip 65-53. Brett Sikorski led Bronson with 13 points while Hudson Wotta had 10 points for the Vikings in a game that featured 55 fouls. Bronson trailed 35-25 at halftime and could get no closer than six points against their old rival from the Saint Joe Valley Conference in the second half.
Union City 69, Colon 56
Union City used a 47-34 second half to defeat Colon 69-56. Larson Kever had 22 points, 10 rebounds and three steals for the Chargers. Brandon Roberts added 14 points and four assists while Brenden Stuchell had 11 points and five assists. Union City also won the JV game over Colon 37-17. Mitchell Watson had eight points for the Chargers while Jayce Goodrich had five rebounds.
