COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The clock is ticking for the Michigan House and Senate to come to an agreement on a 2026 state budget to prevent a possible shutdown of state government when the new fiscal year begins on October 1st.
State Representative Jennifer Wortz of Quincy says the house and senate are about $12 billion dollars apart on their budget proposals and it has gotten frustrating that no talks between the two sides have taken place.
Wortz says it’s imperative the two sides resume talks as soon as possible to try and find some common ground
Wortz says she doesn’t buy into recent claims from Senate Majority leader Winnie Brinks that House Speaker Matt Hall is trying to force a shutdown to prove a point.
With only twenty days remaining there are currently no budget negotiations scheduled even though by state statute the 2026 budget should have been set back in July.
