COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Branch County 911 Communications Board decided on Wednesday to pursue adding non-public safety users to the 911 radio system.
Currently, the only non-public safety user is the Branch County Road Commission. The Road Commission is not charged to be on the system.
After a discussion, the board recommended to Branch County Commissioners that agencies that are not first responders be charged $50 per radio.
Among the additions discussed by the board were the Branch Area Transit Authority, street departments and local school districts.
It was pointed out during a discussion the capacity of the system is currently at 50 percent and with the recommended capacity at 80 percent, there would be room for the proposed additions.
A new Branch County 911 radio system went on line almost three years ago. It was designed to improve signals and communications for police, firefighters and rescue crews. Branch County voters approved a phone surcharge in November of 2020 to help fund the project.
