COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – In a game that saw both teams combine for 823 yards of offense, the Hastings Saxons were able to hold off Coldwater 40-37 on Senior Night at Cardinal Field.
The squads played to their respective strengths all night long: Coldwater had a 294-90 edge in passing yards, while Hastings outgained the Cardinals on the ground 337-102.
The Saxons got the first two scores of the game, on a 36-yard run from Tyler Frazer and a 35-yard pass from Mason Tossava to Trevin Russell. Coldwater’s first score came on the final play of the first quarter, as Dracyn Foster found Bennett McDonald from 50 yards out. Hastings led 14-7 at that point.
The two teams traded scores in the second quarter, as Frazer had an 18-yard TD run and Foster scored on a 2-yard keeper. The Saxons led 22-15 at the half.
Both teams scored twice in the third quarter, starting with Tossava’s 37-yard TD pass to Trevin Russell. Foster followed that up with a 1-yard keeper. Cardale Winebrenner had a 10-yard TD run for Hastings, and on an untimed down to end the quarter following a Saxon penalty, Foster threw a 21-yard TD pass to Dayton Ennis. Hastings led 34-29 after three.
Russell scored on an 11-yard TD run early in the fourth. Foster found Ennis again from 21 yards out, but with 9:40 left, the Saxons were able to run out the clock on their final drive and secure the three-point victory.
Dracyn Foster was 20/33 passing for 294 yards, 4 touchdowns, and no interceptions. He also had 10 carries for 44 yards and a pair of rushing scores. Bennett McDonald finished with 9 receptions for 124 yards and a touchdown, while Dayton Ennis had 4 catches for 70 yards and two scores. Royale Flemming had 113 all-purpose yards on 3 receptions for 55 yards and 7 carries for 58 yards. Flemming and Cody Morrison led the defense with 9 tackles apiece.
For Hastings, Tossava was 3/3 passing for 90 yards and two touchdowns. Trevin Russell had both receiving scores for 72 yards and added 20 carries for 96 yards and a rushing TD for a total of 168 all-purpose yards. Tyler Frazer had 14 carries for 124 yards and two touchdowns and also had an 18-yard reception for 142 all-purpose yards; he also led his team’s defense with 5 tackles. Cardale Winebrenner had 7 carries for 36 yards and a score.
Neither team turned over the ball, but the Saxons did their part to keep the game close by going 2-for-6 on 2-point conversions. The Cardinals made both of their 2-point conversion attempts, and Dayton Ennis was 3-for-3 on extra-point kicks.
With the loss, Coldwater fell to 6-2 overall, 3-2 in the Interstate 8. They will close the regular season next Friday at Marshall. Hastings improved to 6-2 overall and wrapped up league play at 5-1. They will host Wayland next week.
