QUINCY, MI (WTVB) – Negotiations are continuing between the Village of Quincy and Quincy Township that could lead to a permanent agreement that would have the Quincy Police Department providing service to the township.
The Township Board approved a 30-day trial contract for police service during their September meeting.
According to the minutes posted on the Village’s website of the Township Board’s October meeting, Supervisor Kurt Barve felt it was time for a permanent contract.
After a discussion, the Township Board also felt it was time for the Township and the Village to have a permanent police coverage agreement.
It was stated in the minutes that Quincy Village Manager Ryan Smead is committed to retention of police officers and wants to have an agreement that will take things to the next step.
Trustee Marilyn Ostrander made a motion to move forward on negotiating a contract with the village which was supported by Trustee Jim Harmon and the motion was carried.
Barve is hoping that board attorney Keely Beemer will have a contract ready for their meeting in November.
Due to budget concerns, Quincy Township cancelled a previous $24,000 a year contract with the Village in March of 2023. Township officials also felt at the time that the township was not getting adequate service for the money they were paying the Village.
