JACKSON, MI (WTVB) – Consumers Energy has introduced a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) policy as a proactive measure to enhance community safety and reduce wildfire risks during extreme weather or other public safety threats.
This policy, developed with guidance from the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC), allows the utility to shut off power in targeted areas only as a last resort when severe conditions create a high risk for wildfires or pose a danger to people, property, and critical infrastructure.
The company emphasized its commitment to providing timely communication and support to customers if these extreme conditions necessitate a shutoff.
The PSPS policy is part of Consumers Energy’s broader wildfire risk mitigation plan within its Reliability Roadmap, which includes prioritized line clearing, enhanced inspections, and wildfire risk modeling. These efforts aim to improve situational awareness and operational readiness in response to the thousands of wildfires Michigan experiences annually, many linked to changing weather patterns.
Consumers Energy advises customers to prepare for potential outages by updating contact information, creating an emergency plan, and assembling a safety kit.
