COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Bond was set Wednesday at $35,000 in Branch County District Court for a Coldwater man who was arraigned on a felony methamphetamine charge after being arrested by Coldwater City Police early yesterday morning.
Police said that 25-year old Zachary Lee Otis was taken into custody in front of a home on Jackson Street. Officers were dispatched to the scene shortly before 1:00 a.m. Wednesday. When the police arrived, they said 3 men were found in a garage behind the residence and as the officers got closer to the subjects, it appeared at least one of them was smoking some type of substance from a glass pipe.
Police said two of the men tried to leave the scene when they were told to stay put but officers detained them. When he was being questioned near the street in front of the home, police said Otis reached inside his jacket pocket and pulled out a glass pipe and threw it in the street, smashing it at the feet of the officer.
Police reported they found a folding knife in Otis’ jacket. They also said a field test of the shattered glass evidence confirmed the substance on the pipe was methamphetamine.
Otis was charged with possession of meth and tampering with evidence. One of the other men was arrested on a pair of misdemeanor counts and released from jail on a personal recognizance bond.
Otis is due back in court November 8, 2018 for a probable cause hearing.
