UNDATED (WTVB) – The MHSAA Football Playoffs ended Friday night for Quincy and Union City in two dramatically different ways.
BROOKLYN, MI – At Columbia Central High School in Brooklyn, the host Golden Eagles broke a 13-13 first quarter tie with 27 second quarter points and an additional 14 points in the third to lift themselves to a 61-27 win against Quincy in a Division 6 Pre-District game.
Our McDonald’s Player of the Game, Caleb McCavit, had 5 catches for 113 yards and 2 touchdowns, threw for another score late in the game while going 3-of-9 for 56 yards, had a 20-yard carry, and was second on the team in tackles with 7.
Sebastian Gillette led the ground game but was held to 21 rushing yards on 12 carries.
Starting quarterback Evan Henning was 7-of-17 passing for 151 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 3 interceptions and scored a rushing touchdown late.
Evan Coon led the defense with 12 tackles as Quincy closes its season at 6-4.
Columbia Central improves to 9-1 and will host Blissfield, the only team to beat them this season, in next week’s Division 6 District Final. Blissfield upset Hillsdale 21-10.
CENTREVILLE, MI – While the Orioles and Eagles combined for 88 points and 646 yards of total offense, Union City and Centreville were locked in a defensive battle in a Division 7 Pre-District game hosted by the Bulldogs.
Trailing 8-7 with under a minute left, Josh Watson connected with Larson Kever on a 15-yard touchdown pass. The PAT kick gave the Chargers a 14-8 lead. Centreville was able to march down the field and get the game-winning score and two-point conversion with 26.6 seconds left to earn the 16-14 win.
Earlier, Kever ran in the game’s first score from 1 yard out. He finished with 2 catches for 25 yards.
Gavin Hooker was both the leading rusher, with 13 carries for 46 yards, and receiver, with 4 catches for 26 yards.
Josh Watson was 9-of-14 passing for 67 yards, a touchdown, and an interception.
Deacon Dey led the defense with 12 tackles and a sack as Union City’s season ends at 6-4.
The 9-1 Bulldogs will play at undefeated Cassopolis next weekend in a rematch from October 19 that the Rangers won 21-0. Cassopolis had no problem beating Maple Valley 49-6.
Also in Division 7, Clinton defeated Springport 73-34, which leaves Reading the only school from the Big 8 alive in this year’s Playoffs after beating Pittsford 65-48 in Division 8. The Big 8 champs will host defending Division 8 champion Ottawa Lake Whiteford next weekend.
Both playoff qualifiers from the Interstate 8 won their Pre-District games. Two-time defending Division 6 champion Jackson Lumen Christi had little problem with Napoleon, defeating the Pirates 52-30. And Parma Western won its first postseason game in school history, with a 21-14 overtime win against visiting Mattawan.
