COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Residents of Branch County and all of Southern Michigan have a promising chance to witness the spectacular aurora borealis tonight into early Tuesday morning, as the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has issued a strong (G3) geomagnetic storm watch.
A coronal mass ejection (CME) that erupted from the sun on December 6 is expected to impact Earth’s magnetic field, potentially leading to a vibrant light display visible much further south than usual.
A G3 storm is generally associated with a Kp index of 7, the level at which the aurora can be seen across Michigan and as far south as northern Indiana and Ohio.
Tonight’s forecast though may not allow for optimal viewing with clouds and a chance for some light snow.
