COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC) has expanded its policy of photocopying all incoming mail, previously only for general correspondence, to now include confidential and legal mail.
This new measure, which takes effect on January 5, 2026, applies to all 26 state prison facilities, including Coldwater’s Lakeland Correctional Facility, in an effort to combat the smuggling of dangerous drugs like fentanyl and synthetic marijuana into prisons.
For several years, the MDOC has photocopied non-confidential mail, with the original items being shredded, to prevent contraband. However, due to ongoing incidents where drugs were hidden in what appeared to be legitimate legal mail, the policy has been updated to cover all correspondence.
