UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – The Union City Chargers boys basketball team dropped their Big 8 Conference opener on Tuesday night as they were beaten by the Springport Spartans 58-41 at McNett Fieldhouse.
The Spartans seized control of the game in the first half. They led 23-6 after the first quarter and 39-12 at the half.
Despite the lopsided score, Union City refused to give up and managed to outscore Springport in the second half 29-19.
Micah Payne led the Chargers with 16 points while Jacob Smith added 10 points and Nolan Chard grabbed seven rebounds.
Springport’s Dallas Higelmire could not be stopped as he poured in a game-high 32 points and had six rebounds.
The Spartans took advantage of their edge in height and size as they owned a 35-25 edge in rebounding.
The loss dropped Union City’s record to 0-and-3.
Springport also won the J.V. game 49-32.
