COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Branch County Administrator Frank Walsh told the Board of Commissioners during their work session Thursday that the county’s general fund balance will be larger than expected at the end of this year.
Walsh had estimated the general fund balance would be $12,014,794 but that estimate did not consider the $1,000,000 USDA broadband revenue and other factors.
With the budget amendments that are scheduled for the Commissioners formal action next Tuesday, Walsh says the fund balance on December 31 is now expected to be in the range of $13 million.
Walsh added Branch County continues to be in a strong fiscal position.
He pointed out in his memo to Commissioners that the county’s Municipal Employees Retirement System is 100 percent funded, they have five new contracts in place, the 2026 budget is balanced, there is no retiree health care debt, and the county’s 2025 staff retention is over 95 percent.
