COLDWATER , MI (WTVB) – Earlier this month, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR) awarded the City of Coldwater a Recreation Passport grant for significant upgrades to Optimist Park. This is City Manager Keith Baker
This funding, announced as part of a $1.9 million statewide initiative, will be matched by $150,000 in city funds to support a total project cost of approximately $300,000.
Renovations will aim to modernize the small 1988 park located at the corner of North Hudson Street and Abbott Avenue.
The “Optimist Park Improvement Project” includes a collaborative effort with the Pansophia Academy, which plans to remove the shared fence and construct a new pavilion for community use.
Extensive renovations scheduled for next summer feature the addition of two new multi-purpose sports courts—one for basketball and another for pickleball—alongside a relocated entrance, new walkways, and fresh landscaping.
While existing playground equipment will remain, the park will receive updated safety surfacing, aluminum fencing, and a new sail cover for shade.
