GRAND RAPIDS, MI (WTVB) – Coldwater finished its stint at the 2025 Cornerstone University High School Holiday Tournament with a come-from-behind 59-47 victory against Sparta in the Boys Blue Division consolation game Tuesday afternoon.
The Cardinals led 17-11 after the first quarter, but the Spartans used a 20-4 run in the second to take a 31-21 halftime lead. Sparta extended that lead to 15 points early in the third before Julian Thompson sparked the Coldwater comeback effort. He scored 14 points in the quarter as the Cardinals held a 19-10 edge in the period and trailed by just one, 41-40, entering the final quarter.In that pivotal stanza, Coldwater outscored Sparta 19-6 to secure the win and improve to 3-6 on the season.
Thompson finished with 16 points, while Bennett McDonald had 12 points and 7 rebounds. Gavin Taylor scored 9 points, on 9-for-10 shooting from the free throw line, and dished out 7 assists.
The Cardinals are idle until Tuesday, January 6th, when they visit Interstate 8-leading Pennfield.
Tyler Pangborn led all scorers with 18 points for Sparta, who fell to 3-3 on the season.
