QUINCY, MI (WTVB) – EDF Power Solutions plans to build a new utility-scale battery energy storage system in Quincy Township , which would be the fifth such facility in Branch County.
The project was revealed during a Quincy Village Council meeting earlier this month, and is part of a regional increase in renewable energy infrastructure.
The proposed facility, which is not expected to be operational before 2030, is planned for a site east of the Quincy, near a major ITC power line and the Indiana Northeast Railroad.
It is expected to be similar in size and technology to the nearby Jupiter Power Tibbits plant.
The proposal emerges as the local planning commission is creating new zoning regulations for battery storage centers. EDF prefers collaborating with local officials over the state’s approval system, although Michigan’s Public Act 233 permits developers to bypass local zoning if there isn’t a compatible ordinance in place.
A safety specialist is scheduled to attend future Village Council meetings to address community concerns, which have previously included fire safety, potential environmental impacts, agricultural land loss, and visual impact.
The project is intended to help Michigan reach its goal of 2,500 megawatts of battery storage by 2030 to support the shift to wind and solar energy.
Three similar facilities are also being considered in Coldwater Township.
