COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Branch County Panfish Club is gearing up for a pair of exciting ice fishing tournaments this weekend, January 3 and 4, offering anglers a chance to compete for cash payouts, side pots, and season-long points.
The action kicks off tomorrow, with a tournament that has been relocated from Messenger Lake to Craig Lake due to current conditions.
The event will take place at the public access site, running from 7:30 a.m. to noon.
This tournament is open to all participants, whether competing as teams or individuals. The entry fee is $50 per team or individual. An optional $5 side pot is available for the largest catches in several categories: Bluegill/Redear Sunfish, Perch, Crappie, Pike, and “Junk Fish.” Participants can enter all pots for $75 per team and earn 5 points toward the season standings for each side pot victory.
The main payout returns 75% of fees to the top five finishers, with the remaining 25% allocated to the club’s end-of-year points fund and Classic event. For every five teams added beyond 25 entries, an additional payout place will be included. Anglers are allowed three lines this year, but one must be a jigging rod. Permitted setups include two tip-ups, or a jig rod with a dead stick and one tip-up.
No pre-registration is required. Sign-ups begin at the public access site at 6:30 a.m. on Saturday.
On Sunday, January 4, the club has scheduled its tournament at Cub Lake, located on South Hillsdale Road in Hillsdale County (just across the county line from Branch County). The tournament will follow the same 7:30 a.m. to noon format, with identical rules, fees, and payout structure as Saturday’s event.
Conditions on Cub Lake are reported to be improving, and club officials are closely monitoring ice safety. A final decision on the lake will be announced by late Friday. If Cub Lake proves unsuitable, a replacement location will be named during Saturday’s tournament at Craig Lake.
Anglers are encouraged to check the Branch County Panfish Club’s Facebook page (search for Branch County Panfish Club) for the latest updates, ice reports, and any last-minute changes.
These back-to-back events offer a great opportunity for local and visiting anglers to enjoy Michigan’s winter fishing tradition, compete for prizes, and contribute to the club’s season-long championship points race. Participants are reminded to prioritize ice safety, follow all Michigan DNR regulations, and dress for the cold weather. Good luck to all competitors!
