COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – As we begin the first full week of the new year, a significant “January Thaw” is settling in over Southern Michigan.
Following a frigid start to 2026 where highs struggled to reach the mid-20s, a dramatic shift in the jet stream is now ushering in unseasonably warm air.
Meteorologists from the National Weather Service say a steady climb in temperatures, starting today , and rising into the lower 40s by Tuesday and Wednesday.
This warming trend is expected to peak on Thursday, with a balmy high of 50°F and a 70% chance of rain by evening.
Forecasters describe this multi-day stretch as a “bizarre” weather pattern for Michigan, as the region prepares for temperatures nearly 20 degrees above the seasonal average.
While the week will be largely snow-free, the sudden warmth and accompanying rain showers—particularly those expected Tuesday, could trigger a rapid melt of the existing snowpack.
Looking ahead to the weekend, temperatures are expected to fall back closer to normal with highs dropping back into the 30’s.
