COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – After trying to work out several concerns for nearly an hour, the Coldwater Planning Commission voted on Monday night to postpone a decision on a special land use permit from Mashal Ali Abdo to operate a small tire repair shop in a vacant space at 36 East Chicago.
They asked Planning & Zoning Administrator Robert Hawley to work with the applicant before the permit request comes back before the Commission.
Abdo said the proposed business would have two employees.
But the city staff recommended that the Planning Commission not approve the permit at this time because they felt the application did not comply with adequacy of information, pedestrian safety, vehicular circulation, parking, and overall health and safety.
Commission member Andrew Cameron felt work needed to be done on the application.
The decision to postpone action on the application came after there was a 3-3 tie vote to deny it.
In other business, the Planning Commission approved special land use permit request from Manthri Properties to turn the commercial building at 61 East Chicago into a three bedroom, one-bathroom residential dwelling.

The property at 61 East Chicago has seen several uses in recent years. It had been used as the Michigan Indigent Defense Commission office for Branch County. Coldwater McDonald’s restaurant owner and operators Jim and Laura Maynard had their offices there until 2018.
