COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Branch County District Judge Brent Weigle has officially filed paperwork to seek a fourth six-year term in the 2026 election cycle.
A fixture on the 3A Judicial District bench since January 1, 2009, Weigle previously served as the county’s District Court Magistrate for 13 years under his predecessor, Judge David T. Coyle.
Expressing his gratitude for the continued opportunity to serve, Weigle—who often refers to the district court as “The People’s Court” due to its high volume of civil and misdemeanor cases, said in a release he looks forward to maintaining his role in the local justice system.
Weigle’s legal career in Branch County spans four decades, beginning in 1986 as an assistant prosecuting attorney shortly after he earned his Juris Doctor from the Thomas M. Cooley School of Law.
Before his judicial appointment and subsequent elections, he spent five years in private practice as an associate at the Coldwater law firm of Stevens and Hayes.
Outside of the courtroom, the long-time Coldwater resident says he remains deeply rooted in the community where he and his wife, Margaret, raised four sons, most of whom still reside in the area
