UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – The Union City Chargers bounced back from their first loss of the season on Friday night as they defeated the Reading Rangers 40-34 in a Big 8 Conference girls basketball at McNett Fieldhouse.
Points were hard to come by in a very defensive first half as the Chargers built a 17-11 lead.
Both offenses finally found some traction in the third quarter. Union City outscored Reading 17-12 to take a 34-23 lead heading into the final period.
The Rangers fought back in the final quarter and trimmed the Chargers lead to five points but could get no closer.
Nala Payne led a balanced Union City attack with nine points while Madison Krummrey and Ellie Williams both had eight points.
Reading’s Bria Wiler scored a game-high 16 points. The Chargers are now 8-1 overall and 4-1 in the Big 8.
The Rangers are now 4-5 overall and 0-4 in the conference.
Reading won the J.V. game 27-26.
