LOWELL, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater High School gymnastics team travelled to Lowell Saturday for the annual Lowell Invite. The competition featured teams from around the state.
Leading the meet was Rockford Black with a 142.675. Following them in second was Parma Western A with a 140.15, and in third was Rockford Orange with a 137.075.
Vasser and Lowell High Schools rounded out the top five. Coldwater finished in 10th place overall with a 112.15.
The Cardinals improved their total score just shy of four points from Wednesday’s meet, starting the season with a 108.6, which improved to a 112.15 Saturday. The Cardinals collected five regional qualifiers throughout Saturday, with two on beam and three on vault.
The Cardinals started the day on bars; the Red team started the competition with Maryfer Glavan. Contributing to the team total were Sofia Gruner (5.55), Macy Poradzisz (5.7), Annika Johnson (4.95), and Alyssa Everett (4.9). The Coldwater White team had two girls compete on bars, starting with Kennedy Austin and finishing with Payton Taylor, who competed on bars for the first time.
The second event for the Cardinals was beam, and leading for the Red team was Galvan. Johnson was up next, collecting her first regional qualifier of the season and contributing to the team score with a 7.65. Poradzisz (7.025) and Everett (6.875) also help contribute to the team score on beam. The Red team ended with Gruner, who collected her second beam regional qualifier of the season with an 8.1. The White team had two girls compete on beam, starting with Taylor and ending with Austin.
The Cardinals then went to the floor, and leading for the Red team was Everett. Following her were Kinley Cummings (7.2), Poradzisz (7.05), Johnson (7.65), and Gruner (7.7), who all contributed to the team score. The White team followed them, starting with Mariana Duque Bermudez; following her were Austin and Taylor.
The Cardinals ended the day on vault, starting with the red team. First up was Gruner, who picked up her second regional qualifier of the day, and on vault with an 8.25. Next up was Galvan, who got a personal best of the season with a 7.85. Also getting a personal best was Cummings with a 7.7. Ending for our red team was Johnson, who also gained her second qualifier of the day with an 8.0. The White team started with Taylor, who competed in her first-ever vault, getting a 7.55. Austin finished the event strong, gaining her first-ever regional qualifier with an 8.05. Many of these girls either gained a regional qualifier on vault or were very close to getting one.
The Cardinals travel to Parma Western Thursday, January 15 for their next dual meet.
