COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Portage Northern outscored Coldwater 40-21 in the second half as the Huskies defeated the Cardinals 60-51 Monday night in a non-conference boys basketball contest at the Coach Floyd Eby Gymnasium.
Coldwater led 15-9 after the first quarter and 30-20 at halftime. But Portage Northern’s Quinton Swanson scored 16 of his game-high 25 points in the second half, including a perfect 9-of-9 at the free throw line, as the Huskies had an 18-11 advantage in the third quarter and outscored the Cardinals 22-10 in the final stanza to improve to 6-3 on the season.
Julian Thompson led Coldwater with 16 points and 8 rebounds, while Austin Downs had 12 points, 6 boards, and 3 assists, and Gavin Taylor added 11 points and 2 assists.
The Cardinals fell to 4-8 with the loss. They will host Hastings on Friday.
