COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – January is Cervical Health Awareness Month, and Insight Hospital and Medical Center Coldwater’s John Clark, MD, and Gail Widener, WHNP-BC, are encouraging women to take proactive steps to reduce their risk of cervical cancer.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), nearly 14,000 women in the United States are diagnosed with cervical cancer each year. While cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer in women, it is also one of the most preventable through routine screenings.
Dr Clark says “Early detection of cervical cancer is critical, Women are encouraged to begin regular Papanicolaou (Pap) tests at the age of 21. These screenings can identify abnormal cervical cells early, when treatment is most effective.”
During a routine visit, providers may also perform a human papillomavirus (HPV) test, when appropriate, and a pelvic exam to evaluate the uterus, ovaries, and other reproductive organs.
Dr Widener says “Many women juggle busy schedules and family responsibilities and may put their own health on hold, Regular screenings are an important step in early detection and overall well-being.”
