COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The co-ed basketball season is underway for teams at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic School.
The SCB Upper League Cougars earned a hard-fought 36–32 victory over St. Mary’s in a competitive matchup that showcased strong team effort and balanced contributions. All players saw the court and played key roles in the win.
Jocelyn Hernandez led the way with a game-high 17 points and dominated the boards, pulling down nine rebounds to pace the Cougars on both ends of the floor. Cooper Adams and Louis Tom each added six points, while Rafeal Aguirre chipped in three to round out the scoring.
The contest was tightly contested early, with the score tied after the first quarter. However, the Cougars came out strong in the second half, turning up the intensity on both offense and defense. Their momentum allowed SCB to maintain control for the four-point win. The SCBU team faces off against Trinity White at the Eby Center on Thursday January 15 at 6:30.
SCB Lower Level Team 1 delivered a dominant performance, rolling to a 33–5 victory over the Pansophia B team.
Dane Stritzinger led the Cougars in scoring with nine points, while Christian Hiday added six. Kannon Austin and Noah Langer each chipped in four points, and Mylin Haylett, William Bauer, Blane Fraser, and Colton Hiday rounded out the scoring with two points apiece.
The highlight of the game came from Christian Hiday, who controlled the paint with an impressive 16 rebounds. Beyond his presence on the glass, Hiday consistently looked to set up his novice teammates, showing great teamwork.
Defensively, the Cougars were relentless. William Bauer and Kannon Austin each recorded four steals, while Cameron Berry and Mylin Haylett added three steals apiece. The team’s strong defensive effort set the tone from start to finish. Team 1 plays again on Thursday January 15 at the Eby Center vs St. Marys at 5:30.
SCB Lower Level Team 2 came up short in a hard-fought contest against St. Mary’s, falling 35–26 despite a strong finish and determined effort. The Cougars struggled to find their rhythm early, allowing the Raiders to build a sizable lead in the first quarter.
SCB2 showed resilience, coming alive in the second, third, and fourth quarters. They tightened the gap with improved energy and execution. Gavin Hampton led the Cougars with an impressive all-around performance, scoring 16 points while adding four steals and three rebounds and 1 block. Blake Barle also turned in a strong outing with six points, seven rebounds, four steals, and two blocks.
Kingtson Timmons and Jordan Linklater each contributed two points and two steals, while Claire Hampton made her presence felt on the defensive end, forcing turnovers and recording two steals.
Despite the loss, the game showcased intense hustle, teamwork, and growth from the Cougars. It proved to be a valuable learning experience as the team continues to develop. SCB Lower Level Team 2 will look to bounce back when they face the Pansophia A team on Thursday, January 15, at 4:30 p.m. at the Eby Center.
