COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater Board of Public Utilities is celebrating 135 years of continuous service to the community in 2026, marking a significant milestone since its founding in 1891.
What began as a modest operation providing electricity solely for street lighting has grown into the third-largest municipal electric utility in Michigan by kilowatt-hour sales.
Over the decades, CBPU has expanded its offerings to include water, wastewater, and telecommunications services, evolving alongside the City of Coldwater while maintaining a steadfast commitment to safety, reliability, and customer-focused innovation.
From a single 300,000-gallon water tower in its early days to three modern towers delivering more than 3.5 million gallons of water per day, and from basic cable television to cutting-edge high-speed fiber optic internet, CBPU has consistently upgraded its infrastructure to meet the community’s changing needs.
Wastewater treatment now processes over three million gallons daily. Director Paul Jakubczak credited past and present employees for the utility’s success, saying, “We are grateful to the dedicated employees whose commitment has helped make Coldwater a great place to live, work, and play.”
To mark the anniversary, CBPU has planned year-long celebrations, including a Customer Appreciation luncheon and open house event Friday, August 7.
