QUINCY, MI (WTVB) – The Union City Chargers had to hold off a frantic comeback by the Quincy Orioles as they defeated the Orioles 59-54 during Quincy’s Hall of Fame Night inside of the Coolest Gym in Michigan.
Union City led throughout most of the game and appeared to have things in hand several times.
They led 13-8 after the first quarter and 28-17 late in the first half. But the never-say-die Orioles scored the last nine points before halftime to cut Union City’s lead to 28-26.
Union City was up 37-30 in the third quarter when Quincy went on a nine point capped by a Kendyl Musielewicz triple to take a brief 39-37 lead.
Calli Wilkinson responded with a triple which gave Union City a 40-39 lead after three quarters.
Union City looked to be in control as they built a 52-45 lead with about three minutes left. But Quincy made one last surge to get the lead down to two, 54-52, with 25 seconds left.
The Orioles were unable to get a critical defensive rebound off a missed Union City foul shot and the Chargers made enough free throws in the final seconds to seal the win.
Musielewicz had a sensational night as finished with a game-high 28 points. Ashlyn Fickle added 15 points for Quincy while Josi Parker had 11 points.
Nala Payne and Ellie Williams both scored 13 points for the Chargers while Wilkinson had 10 points. Payne also had eight assists and five steals while Williams and Brooke Thomas both grabbed six rebounds.
Union City is now 9-2 overall and 4-1 in the Big 8. They stay one game back on Concord for first place in the conference.
Quincy drops to 4-4 overall and 3-2 in the Big 8.
Union City also won the J.V. game 24-17.
