COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Residents of Branch County can breathe a sigh of relief this weekend as a significant winter storm that once threatened the region is now projected to track south.
Earlier forecasts warned of high-impact ice and snow for much of Lower Michigan, but the latest updates from the National Weather Service indicate the system has shifted toward the Carolinas and the Mid-Atlantic.
While the core of the heavy precipitation is expected to miss the county entirely, parts northern Indiana may still be skimmed by the edge of the storm.
Despite being spared from heavy accumulations, the area remains under the grip of an intense arctic blast with high temperatures struggling to reach the teens. Dangerously cold wind chills, driven by wind gusts up to 40 mph, are expected to persist throughout the week, while minor “clipper” systems may still bring light lake-effect flurries totaling 2-4 inches.
