CENTREVILLE, MI (WTVB) – A former contracted food service worker for Mendon Community Schools was sentenced to prison Friday for the sexual assault of two teenage boys, according to the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office.
34-year-old Kaitlyn Sand received a minimum sentence of five years in prison after pleading no contest in December 2025 to two counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct. Following her prison term, Sand will be eligible for parole but must remain on the Michigan Sex Offender Registry for the remainder of her life.
The investigation into Sand began in late 2023 after a 15-year-old student reported he had sexual contact with her in March of that year. Court documents detailed incidents occurring at the student’s home and in a store parking lot in Three Rivers.
A second victim, age 16, was also identified during the investigation. Additionally, authorities alleged Sand used Snapchat to communicate with minors to facilitate the sale of alcohol.
Sand worked at Mendon Jr./Sr. High School between August 2021 and March 2023 through a third-party provider. Superintendent Leasa Griffith-Mathews confirmed Sand was never a direct employee of the school district. Sand was terminated from her position in March 2023 for unrelated reasons prior to the criminal charges being filed in September 2025.
As part of a plea agreement, prosecutors dropped four additional sexual assault charges and one count of tampering with evidence. In a statement, the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office urged parents to maintain strict vigilance over their children’s social media and messaging app usage.
