NEWTON TOWNSHIP, MI (WTVB) – On Sunday, emergency responders successfully saved four horses that fell through the ice of a frozen pond at the Turtle Creek Golf Course in Newton Township.
The animals had escaped a nearby enclosure around 8:40 a.m. and wandered onto the ice, which succumbed to their weight despite frigid temperatures. Trapped in shallow but freezing water, the horses required a coordinated manual extraction by at least 10 rescuers from the Calhoun County Area Law Enforcement Underwater Rescue Team (ALURT) and firefighters from the Burlington, Newton Township, and Union City departments.

Following the strenuous rescue, all four horses were able to walk away from the scene and were transported for medical treatment and further care.
The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office commended the rapid teamwork of the responding agencies and dispatchers, noting that no humans were injured during the operation.
Officials are still investigating how the horses originally breached their fencing.
