HOWELL, MI (WTVB) – Michigan’s official weather prognosticator, Woody the Woodchuck, predicted six more weeks of winter during her 29th annual ceremony this morning at the Howell Nature Center.
Unlike many of her furry peers, Woody’s forecast is not determined by a shadow; instead, it is based on whether she remains outside on her ceremonial stump for at least 30 seconds.
Woody retreated back into her burrow before the 30-second mark, signaling a prolonged winter. This prediction aligns with that of Pennsylvania’s Punxsutawney Phil, who also forecasted more winter after seeing his shadow earlier this morning.
Woody has been a staple of Michigan’s Groundhog Day traditions since 1999 and reportedly holds an accuracy rate of approximately 65% to 70%, significantly higher than many other furry forecasters.
