COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Public school districts across Michigan are preparing for the biannual Spring Count Day today, a day that helps determine state funding for the current academic year.
Mandated by the State School Aid Act, this “supplemental” count requires schools to tally all students in attendance to calculate their official membership numbers. While the fall count in October accounts for 90% of a district’s per-pupil funding, the spring count determines the remaining 10%, making high attendance vital for securing resources for technology, staffing, and student programs.
The Michigan Department of Education emphasizes that students must be present for the full school day to be automatically included in the tally.
For those unable to attend due to illness or emergencies, state rules allow schools to count students with excused absences if they return to class within 30 calendar days.
Local administrators have reminded families that this year’s count carries a new stricture: schools are now prohibited from offering financial incentives, such as gift cards, to boost attendance, with violations potentially resulting in a 5% reduction in state aid.
