WASHINGTON, DC (WTVB) – Michigan 5th District Congressman Tim Walberg joined a unanimous Republican House majority on Tuesday, to pass the SAVE America Act, a sweeping election reform bill that would mandate proof of U.S. citizenship for voter registration and require a photo ID for federal elections nationwide.
The bill’s passage comes despite stark opposition from House Democrats, who argue it will disenfranchise millions of eligible citizens who lack easy access to documents like passports or birth certificates.
While noncitizen voting is already illegal under federal law, Walberg and his colleagues maintain the new requirements are necessary to restore public trust and prevent potential foreign interference. The SAVE America Act now heads to the Senate, where it faces a difficult path to becoming law due to the chamber’s narrow margins and the need for bipartisan support.
