COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A request to transfer the Child Support Coordinators position from the Prosecutors Office to the Friend of the Court was brought forward to next week’s meeting by the Branch County Board of Commissioners during their work session on Thursday morning.
Court officials say the request is being made to better serve the community and to free up time in the Prosecutors Office.
Commissioners were also told foot traffic would be reduced in the prosecutor’s office.
Friend of the Court Director and Referee Lona Julien pointed out the child support establishment function would be more effective and efficient if it was handled by the Friend of the Court office.
Branch County Prosecutor Zach Stempien agreed with a study out of Genesee County that suggested switching the position to the Friend of the Court and added it made more sense.
Stempien said right now there are quite a few people that come into his office on child support matters who are also facing criminal charges which can create an awkward situation.
