COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Coldwater Community Schools, in partnership with food service provider Chartwells K-12, is again this year offering take-home breakfasts and lunches for Muslim students during the holy month of Ramadan.
This initiative, which serves a student population that is approximately 23% Muslim, allows students who are fasting from sunrise to sunset to receive their daily meals at the end of the school day for consumption after dark.
The program operates under a non-congregate meal waiver approved by the Michigan Department of Education and the USDA, ensuring that students do not miss out on nutritional support while fulfilling their religious obligations.
To participate, families must complete an opt-in form provided by the district in both English and Arabic.
Eligible students receive one pre-packaged breakfast and one lunch each day they attend school, provided they did not eat during the standard school meal times.
Under the federal waiver guidelines, parents are not permitted to pick up these meals; they must be handed directly to the students as they depart for the day.
Distribution for the 2026 observance is expected to align with the Ramadan period beginning today and concluding when Ramadan ends on March, 19.
