HASTINGS, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater Cardinal basketball teams made the long road trip to Hastings Friday night and came away with a split on the Saxons’ Senior Night.
Everybody that got on the floor for the Lady Cards scored at least two points as they dominated in their 71-35 victory. Coldwater led 20-7 after one, 33-15 at halftime, and 56-26 after three en route to their fourth straight win, going 15-of-17 from the free throw line and committing just 8 turnovers in the process.
Cousins Mya Porter and Rylie VanAken combined for 40 of their team’s points. Porter finished with 24 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists, while VanAken had 16 points, 4 boards, 2 assists, and 2 steals.
The Cardinals improved to 13-7 overall and finished 10-2 in the Interstate 8, good for second place. They will play at Okemos next Monday and host Otsego next Tuesday to close out the regular season.

In the boys contest, Coldwater trailed by 16 at halftime and couldn’t completely make up the deficit as Hastings won 69-60 to close out the regular season. The Saxons led 15-9 after the first quarter and used the long ball to extend the advantage in the second, draining five triples and outscoring the Cardinals 23-13. Thanks to a 17-11 third quarter, Coldwater trailed by ten points after three, 49-39. They cut the deficit to as few as 5 in the fourth, but could get no further as their three-game winning streak came to an end.
Gavin Taylor had a team-high 17 points, while Austin Downs added 12. The Cardinals concluded the regular season with a record of 11-11 and finished fourth in the Interstate 8 at 6-6. They will host Gull Lake Monday at 7 p.m. at the Coach Floyd Eby Gymnasium in the opening round of the Division 1 Sturgis District.
