STURGIS, MI (WTVB) – Coldwater saw its season come to an end at the MHSAA Division 1 Boys Basketball District Semifinals at Sturgis High School, as Battle Creek Central ran past the Cardinals 65-58 Wednesday night.
The Bearcats led 18-10 after the first quarter, but Coldwater put on a defensive show in the second, outscoring BC Central 8-2 in the quarter and cutting the deficit to two points at halftime, 20-18.
The Bearcats had a hot start to the third quarter, using an 11-1 spurt in the first 90 seconds of the stanza to pull ahead 31-19. BCC led 47-36 after three, and the Cardinal comeback effort in the fourth was hindered after their two leading scorers, Gavin Taylor and Julian Thompson, fouled out. Owen Tappenden scored nine of his team-high 15 points in the final quarter, and Coldwater cut the lead to four late, but they couldn’t get over the hump.
Tappenden had 7 rebounds and 2 steals to go with his 15 points, while Gavin Taylor finished with 8 points before fouling out. The Cardinals wrapped up their campaign with a 12-12 record.
Lee Campbell Jr. led all scorers with 19 points for Battle Creek Central, while Braylen McCoy had 13. The Bearcats improved to 10-10 and will face the Loy Norrix Knights Friday at 7 p.m. for the District title. Norrix advanced by eliminating Sturgis in the first game of the night 52-44.
