COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Law enforcement agencies across Michigan , including the Branch County Sheriff’s Office and the Coldwater Police Department, are joining a statewide enforcement campaign this March to emphasize the “Move Over” law.
The initiative, often messaged as “Move Over or Get Pulled Over,” aims to protect first responders, tow truck operators, and maintenance crews working along busy roadways. Motorists are reminded that they are legally required to slow down to at least 10 mph below the posted speed limit and, if safe to do so, move over at least one lane when approaching any stationary vehicle with flashing, rotating, or oscillating lights.
During this high-visibility enforcement period, deputies and officers will be specifically monitoring for violators to prevent the rising number of roadside injuries and fatalities.
According to the Michigan State Police, failure to comply with the Move Over law can result in a civil infraction carrying a $400 fine and two points on a driver’s license.
For more severe incidents where a violation causes injury or death to a responder, motorists can face felony charges and up to 15 years in prison.
The Branch County Sheriff’s Office urge all drivers to stay alert and give emergency workers the space they need to return home safely.
