COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Michigan gas prices have surged over the past 24 hours to a state wide average of $3.13 per gallon marking a 14-cent spike since yesterday.
The sudden increase follows a trend where prices hit the $3 mark on Monday after several weeks below the $3.00 mark.
Analysts attribute the rising pump prices to a combination of seasonal factors, such as refinery maintenance and the transition to summer-blend gasoline, alongside heightening geopolitical tensions in the Middle East that threaten global oil supplies.
Experts warn that if crude oil prices reach $100 a barrel, Michigan drivers could eventually see prices as high as $4 per gallon.
In Branch County, local motorists are feeling the impact of these broader trends as well with the average price rising nearly 45-cents per gallon since Monday to an average of $3.25 per gallon with some stations as high as $3.39 per gallon.
Additionally, a new state fuel tax adjustment that took effect in 2026, which replaced the previous 6% sales tax with a flat fuel tax, is contributing to the overall higher costs Michigan drivers are currently facing at the pump.
