UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – The Riley Dam project in Union City will begin this Tuesday. The lowering of Union Lake will start on that day and last for two weeks.
The water will go down about six inches per day for about 14 days until it is one foot above the spillway.
It is highly recommend that anything from the lake be removed that could be effected.
The Riley Dam project is expected to take 10 weeks. If everything goes well, the work will be done by Thanksgiving. Village Manager Chris Mathis says the lake was drained in a same manner back in 2000 for a similar project. Union City has been powered by the Riley Dam since 1922.
Meanwhile, Union City village officials say thanks to the assistance of the Union Lake Association, the fish rearing pond has been completely drained to assist drying the area for the installation of a nearby toe drain.
